Functional Genomics

Dr Chen-Fu showing a student how to use a piece of lab equipment

The Functional Genomics group at CUGI is supported by the Chen Lab. The group utilizes genome-wide, global experimental approaches to study gene function by integration of the information and reagents provided by structural genomics. DNA microarray and related proteomic technologies are applied for the investigation of the function of an organism's genes as revealed in their patterns of expression and regulation in association with biological phenomena. The group is also developing methodologies in statistics and data mining for the analysis of large-scale information derived through this research.

CUGI's Functional Genomics Group is equipped with a Agilent BioAnalyzer, a Agilent microarray scanner, and a Stratgene Mx-3000 real-time PCR System. The group has experienced personnel capable of measuring gene expression using either microarray technology or real-time RT-PCR. Bioinformatics methods have been developed and integrated for data analysis and identification of biomarkers or signature genes.

The Agilent two-color microarrays are used to obtain gene expression fold changes by comparing treated cells (experiments) to untreated ones (controls). The complete service package currently rates at $390 to $490 per microarray, including experiment design, cell line cultivation, cell toxicity assay for the drug (if applicable), RNA preparation, RNA quality check by Bioanalyzer, RNA probe labeling and hybridization, one commercial microarray (glass slide), and image analysis by Agilent Feature Extraction. Every step of the microarray experiment can be customized and the rates for individual procedure are available upon request.

Price break-down:
1. Experimental design (provided by CUGI or customers) - No Charge
2. Agilent microarray slides (provided by customers) - No Charge (competitive prices for CUGI pre-purchases of Agilent Human arrays available)
3. RNA samples (provided by customers)
4. BioAnalyzer Run for RNA - $30
5. Complete Cy3 and Cy5 Labeling - $300
6. Hybridization and Scan - $60/slide (Scan only is $30/slide)
7. Complete bioinformatic analysis - $100 (optional)

High quality and sensitive real-time RT-PCR is provided to measure the gene expression fold change. The cost for each gene for two samples (experiment and control) is currently $1175 per gene, including primer design and primer oligos, RNA isolation, and data analysis. Rates for individual procedure are available upon request. We also offer bioinformatics analysis for high-throughput RT-PCR results with a fee of $57 per hour.

RNA Quality Guarantee

Isolated RNA usually has a concentration between 100 ng/uL and 1000 ng/uL. Genomic DNA is removed from the sample using RNase-free DNase which assures extreme purity of high quality RNA. RNA integrity is tested using Bioanalyzer. Samples with a degradation or contamination spectrum will be removed from further downstream experiments.

Shipping & Delivery Costs

For all our services, shipping costs will be added if delivery of certain product or analysis report/CD is desired. Analysis report can be sent through email or downloaded from one of our servers with no extra charge.
